The more intense the blue colour and the contrast in the stone, the higher and rarer is the quality. Larimar also comes in green and can have red spots, brown strikes, etc., due to the presence of other minerals or oxidation. Quality grading is according to coloration and the typical mineral crystal configuration in the stone. Most jewellery produced is set in silver, but sometimes high-grade larimar is also set in gold. Larimar jewellery is offered to the public in the Dominican Republic, and elsewhere in the Caribbean as a local speciality. It is a single mountainside now perforated with approximately 2,000 vertical shafts, surrounded by rainforest vegetation and deposits of blue-colored mine tailings. The most important outcrop of blue pectolite is located at Los Chupaderos in the section of Los Checheses, about 10 km (6.2 mi) southwest of the city of Barahona in the southwestern region of the Dominican Republic. The tumbling action along the streambed provided the natural polishing to the blue larimar, which makes them stand out in contrast to the dark gravels of the streambed. The Bahoruco River carried the pectolite-bearing sediments to the sea. When these rocks erode, the pectolite fillings are carried down the slope to end up in the alluvium and the beach gravels. These pectolite cavity fillings are a secondary occurrence within the volcanic flows, dikes, and plugs. These rocks contained cavities or vugs which were later filled with a variety of minerals, including the blue pectolite. Miocene volcanic rocks, andesites and basalts, erupted within the limestones of the south coast of the island. Pectolite is found in many locations, but larimar has a unique volcanic blue coloration, which is the result of copper substitution for calcium. Larimar is a type of pectolite or a rock composed largely of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. An upstream search revealed the in situ outcrops in the range and soon the Los Chupaderos mine was formed. The few stones that they found were alluvial sediment, washed into the sea by the Bahoruco River. Méndez took his young daughter's name Larissa and the Spanish word for sea ( mar) and formed Larimar, to suggest the colors of the Caribbean Sea where it was found. Natives believed that the stone came from the sea, and they called the gem Blue Stone. Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling rediscovered Larimar in 1974 on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range, the coastal province of Barahona. Pectolites were not yet known in the Dominican Republic, and the request was rejected. The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Mining records show that Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren of the Barahona Parish requested permission on 22 November 1916 to explore and exploit the mine of a certain blue rock that he had discovered. Its coloration varies from bluish white, light-blue, light-green, green-blue, turquoise blue, turquoise green, turquoise blue-green, deep green, dark green, to deep blue, dark blue and purple, violet and indigo and the larimar can come in many varieties and color mixes. Larimar is the tradename for a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, around the city of Barahona. While a 10-month subscription to Dollar Shave Club costs $90, a 10-month supply of razors from Dorco, for similar models with the same blades, costs under $30. In 2012, Ben Popken, the former editor of The Consumerist, confirmed that Dollar Shave Club buys all of its high-quality blades from Dorco. Its more popular four-blade model costs $6 per month, and a six-blade model costs $9 per month. The only razor that actually costs $1 a month is the company’s twin-blade subscription. Several readers inquired about Dollar Shave Club, the subscription service that promises to deliver high-quality razors to your doorstep for “ a dollar a month.” Though Dollar Shave Club claims its products are unisex, they’re shaped more like face razors, and most of its media shows people shaving their faces. And while the large pivoting head is helpful for shaving ankles and knees, it’s too cumbersome for shaving the bikini line. While customer reviewers who have arthritis or difficulty with hand steadiness laud the design, overall we found its six blades (two sets of three with a small gap between them) dull compared with those of our picks. You can also grip the handle like you would any other razor. There’s a fairly steep learning curve when shaving using the device as intended (if you buy this model on Amazon, along with a request to review the product, you will also receive from the company a PDF with four recommended options for maneuvering the device). Roller balls mounted in the handle that face the skin are meant to help the razor glide along. Unlike our picks, which are all cartridges atop long handles, the Aveline cartridge is mounted to a stout, curved handle with a hook for slipping over a finger-so there’s no need to grip anything. Intrigued by its unique design, we tried the six-blade Aveline razor from HeadBlade.
įield and greenhouse phenotyping-measuring plant phenotypes in standard growing conditions, rather than in a controlled lab, is a difficult challenge. Recently, many new technologies use computer vision methods for phenotyping. The image-based phenotyping approach aims to perform extraction phenomics based on obtained images data in non-destructive way. They are also amenable to automation, making it feasible to study large sample sizes for increased statistical power. Ĭonsequently, there is an urgent need for the development of novel methods in phenotyping for a non-destructive determination of diverse traits under field conditions -non-destructive, meaning that phenotypic data can be collected from the same organism over the course of a long experiment. The process of crop phenotyping, including the extraction of visual traits from plants, allows farmers to examine their crops and infer important properties concerning the crop status, such as insufficient irrigation, or developing diseases. In order to meet the growing demand for food, the agriculture industry has to develop technological tools which will allow us to increase crop production. The constant increase of the world’s population increases the needs for technological developments in the agriculture industry. Our results show that modern RGB-D sensors, in particular, the Intel D435 sensor, provides a viable tool for close range phenotyping tasks in fields. We conduct an outdoor experiment, measuring plant attribute in various distances and light conditions. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of four different RGB-D sensors for this task. The recent rise of low cost, yet reasonably accurate, RGB-D sensors has opened the way for using these sensors in field phenotyping applications. Researchers often advocate the use of automated systems for phenotyping, relying on the use of sensors for making measurements. Currently, large scale phenotyping in fields is typically done using manual labor, which is a costly, low throughput process. In agriculture, phenotyping can be used to make decisions concerning the management of crops, such as the watering policy, or whether to spray for a certain pest. Phenotyping is the task of measuring plant attributes for analyzing the current state of the plant. And never use a gas-powered lamp or cooker inside a tent. For extra peace of mind, you’re advised to have your boiler, gas fire or wood/coal fire’s flue checked at regular intervals. Why should I be concerned?Īccording to the NHS, 25 people die every year in the UK from accidental CO poisoning. Worse, you might not even wake up at all. To give you some idea of how dangerous higher levels of concentration can be, 1,500ppm could result in death within an hour and 6,000ppm within 15 minutes.Īll of these concentrations are bad enough when you’re awake and realise that something isn’t quite right – especially if others are feeling a similar effect – but if you’re asleep, you may wake up with a severe headache and nausea and be incapable of even crawling for fresh air. It depends on the length of exposure, but the real danger level starts at around 400ppm (two to three hours of exposure at this level can be life-threatening). Most people will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure to CO levels of under, say, 40ppm. READ NEXT: The best wireless alarm systems to buy What levels of CO are considered dangerous? It’s also worth noting that the test button on these devices doesn’t actually test the sensor – it only makes sure that the circuit’s working. Tests in the US have shown that alarms over eight years old can fail to detect CO at levels of above 400ppm. Generally speaking, it’s worth playing it safe and replacing your alarm a year or two before its life is supposed to run out. For example, an alarm will sound after three and a half hours of continuous exposure at a level of 50ppm, yet will sound after eight minutes of continuous exposure at a level of 400ppm.”Ĭarbon monoxide sensors have a finite lifespan of between five and seven years, although a few manufacturers now claim that their sensors will last a full ten years. An alarm’s response time will vary depending on the level of carbon monoxide in the air. “For a person to begin feeling the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, they would need to be exposed to a carbon monoxide level of 50 parts per million (ppm) for eight hours. According to respected CO alarm manufacturer Kidde, “a carbon monoxide detector is a time-weighted alarm that measures the buildup of carbon monoxide in a house. The health effects of CO depend on the concentration and length of exposure (carbon monoxide concentration is measured in parts per million). CO is so odourless that even dogs can’t detect it. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include a flu-like headache, dizziness and nausea followed by tiredness, confusion, breathlessness, weakness, loss of muscular coordination and – dare I mention it – death. Once it enters your bloodstream, it invades the red blood cells (haemoglobin), preventing them from carrying oxygen around the body. How to choose the best carbon monoxide alarm for you What is carbon monoxide poisoning?Ĭarbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because you can’t smell it, taste it or see it. Read on for the lowdown and stay safe, people, stay safe. We’ve also scoured the web for both professional and user reviews to back up our results. We’ve called in a selection of CO alarms from top-name brands and put them to the test using the simple but effective “incense in a plastic bag” method. Ensure you opt for a reputable brand such as FireAngel, First Alert, Kidde, Nest or Lifesaver. Be aware, though, that not all CO detectors are sensitive enough and some no-name brands are downright useless – and, therefore, dangerous. Thankfully, there’s an early-warning solution in the form of a carbon monoxide alarm that costs only a few pounds more than a smoke alarm. Like an invisible ghost in a horror movie, it enters a room, slowly sapping the life out of its occupants without anyone realising. Sadly, this writer has been on the receiving end of this silent killer – I lost a sister-in-law and her three dogs – so I’m doubly mindful of just how horrendously dangerous it can be. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced during incomplete combustion of fuels, usually because of a faulty appliance such as a gas boiler, gas-powered fireplace, gas cooker, wood burner or blocked coal fire flue. If a fire breaks out while you’re asleep, the smoke it emits will set off the alarm, hopefully giving you time to get out before being asphyxiated by the fire’s deadly concoction of chemical gases.īut there’s another gas that is possibly even more deadly because you can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Everyone knows how important it is to have a smoke alarm in the home. WHAT’S GOOD: True speakeasy and home of the Benton’s bacon fat-washed Old Fashioned. WORTH NOTING: On the World’s 50 Best list North America for 2023. I highly recommend their mini (AKA cheeky) martini and daiquiri (aka Snackerie). One of the owners Sam Ross is responsible for creating a whole slew of modern cocktails classics such as the Penicillin and Paper Plane. WHAT’S GOOD: Speakeasy style cocktail bar and one of the best in the city. Possibly the smallest bar in NYC and does not take reservations so best not to come with a large group. WORTH NOTING: Number 23 on World’s 50 Best Bars North America. And if you do get a cocktail get the Sharpie Mustache and the 8 Amaro Sazerac. One of the things we love to do here is just sit at the bar (hopefully in front of Sother) and get tasted on all kinds of amaros. Super small, focused on Amaro and bitter drinks we’re big fans of the owner/bartender Sother Teague (and his books). WHAT’S GOOD: This spot is billed as a bitters tasting room. Let us know if you think we’ve overlooked some important ones and we’ll make it a point to visit soon so we can assess adding them in. While we’ve got a lot of ground covered here, there are still many top-notch NYC spots for cocktails that we have not included due to our own familiarity with them or maybe it’s just been a while since we’ve been there. Many of us at Tip Top have lived in New York City and our time there has helped inform many of the things we put into these tiny cans so only fitting that we start there. So we’re going to start up a little series of city guides for the cocktail curious, beverage marauders amongst us. With the joy of travel on the brain comes the pursuit of new places to enjoy cocktails. As we continue on our cocktailing journey, we were thinking about what we love that could potentially add value to your lives. The office is otherwise much like in the other incarnations, but is complemented by the Sub-Basement of Solitude, located below the office building. The key notes on this version's office include the door's location directly across the windows, the closet serving as storage space for Sam and Max's stockpile of weapons, and the "Brovinington" typewriter (seen in the foreground in Sam & Max Hit the Road), which Sam puts to use in The Invaders. Sam: "I wonder if the pie shop gets calls reporting machete-wielding intruders?" Sam: "We may have to go over there and terrify the righteous indignity out of that little fellow."ĭull Guy: "Hello, is this Saint Francis Pie Shop? I'd like to order 200 lemon meringue pies and a small diet cola. Do you sell to convicted felons?"Īngry Man 2: "Hey! You're the jerk who sideswiped me on the Queensborough Bridge! Don't think I didn't get a good look at your long fluffy ears! See you in court!" I'm calling about your upcoming auction of confiscated automatic weapons. Sam: "Doesn't she know I'm old enough to make my own decisions about getting shot?"Ĭalm Man: "Hi. Be careful, honey and try not to get shot today, okay?" Sam's mom: "Sam, it's your mother calling to wish you a good morning. Here are the outcomes:Īngry Man: "Hey! You're the one who cut me off on highway 364! You're a jerk!. Then a random message would play (with a comment from Sam). Max: "Gee, I hope it's something eerily provocative." If you check the message machine, Sam and Max would say: In Sam & Max Hit the Road Messages on the message machine In Monkeys Violating the Heavenly Temple. The office is next door to Flint Paper's.The office is littered and generally soiled. There are pictures on some of the walls. There is a dartboard with a number of weapons (other than darts) sticking out of it.There is a small tv on Sam's desk it has a clothes hanger for an antenna. There are a classic-looking phone and answering machine on a small table next to the door. The door says "Sam & Max Freelance Police" (with "Freelance Police" below "Sam & Max").Still, several elements are seen throughout. The layout of the office for whatever reason changes between incarnations and is subject to redecoration between stories as well. In the comics (and Hit the Road), they usually get a call just after entering the office in the Telltale episodes, they usually get interrupted by the phone while passing their time doing something-or-other. They don't live in it, but they spend a lot of time hanging around it waiting for The Commissioner to call with a new assignment. The Office is the headquarters from which Sam & Max conduct their Freelance Police business. In all the comics, the cartoon and the videogames When she did, she saw a large lantern that had the Yuan Xiao printed on it. During the sixteenth night, as the city was all lit up, Yuan Xiao’s younger sister came with her parents to look at all of the pretty burning lanterns. The Emperor relented to this idea and ordered people to hang lit lanterns outside their home and on the streets and to set off fireworks. It was in this way that the city would appear to be on fire and the Jade Emperor will be fooled as he watches from the Southern Heaven Gate watching the city of Chang’an. He then suggests that every household should hang lit lanterns from their homes and in the streets so that the city appeared to be on fire. It was only in this way, he described to the Emperor, that the fire god would be appeased. He also said that every family in the city should do so as well. He then suggested to the Emperor that on the fifteenth night of the first lunar month, the palace maid Yuan Xiao should make tang yuan for the god of fire. Shuo told the emperor that he knew that the god of fire enjoyed eating tang yuan balls and that he knew for a fact that the palace maid Yuan Xiao made the best tangyuan balls. As it burns, and the city is consumed, the night sky will be illuminated red.”Įmperor Wudi was shocked and asked his minister, Dongfang Shuo for his assistance. The Imperial Palace would soon be burned and that the fire would last a total of 16-days. The letter was to read that “Chang’an is in great peril. Her next instruction was to tell everyone that if they wanted to avoid this fire, then a letter written on red paper had to be hand-delivered to the Emperor and it had to be done soon. She was then instructed to tell everyone that she was ordered to burn down Chang’an and that even the Jade Emperor at the Southern Heavenly Gate would watch her commit this act of arson. He instructed her to then pretend to be a messenger of the god of fire. He listened to the tale of woe about not being able to see her family, so he decided to help her.ĭongfang Shuo told Yuan Xiao to dress all in red and to then go down to the streets of Chang’an. She was about to jump into a well and commit suicide, but Emperor Wudi’s minister Dongfang Shuo saw her attempt as he was picking plum branches and decided to stop her. There is another legend that associates the holiday with a palace maid named Yuan-Xiao. Of course, with a holiday this old, no one knows for sure when it started. However, some people believe that the practice of lighting lanterns in temples is actually connected not to Buddhism but to the worship of Taiyi. This was to mirror the same practice that was done by Buddhist monks who lit lanterns in temples on this day to pay homage to Buddha. Since Emperor Ming was an advocate for this religion, he decided to order all households, temples, and palaces to light lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. At this time during the reign of Emperor Ming, Buddhism was beginning to flourish all across China. The history of this festival can be traced back more than 2,000-years ago to the Hand dynasty. It also shouldn’t be confused with the Magical Lantern Festival held annually in London, or the Water Lantern Festival observed in the U.S. It’s important that this holiday not be confused with other celebrations that might bear the name Lantern Festival, particularly the Mid-Autumn festival that’s known as the Lantern Festival in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. During this holiday, children celebrate by carrying paper lanterns out at night and solving the riddles that are written on these lanterns. In addition to the lantern display, a live DJ, projection mapping, food vendors, and more will keep the party going.Since it’s the last day of the Lunar New Year, the Spring Festival can’t officially end until this day has been celebrated. The botanic garden will be illuminated for over eight acres. Like all three Lantern Festival installations, this will run nightly through Sunday, January 9.Īdding to that first festival, will be an escape at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island. Festive holiday lights, projection mapping and handmade lanterns in the shape of flowers, bugs, animals, and more will create this bright experience. Dubbed "A Bug’s Night," this experience will let you navigate across over 20 acres of vivid lanterns and holiday lights. The first will kick off on October 22, with a drive-through experience at the Nassau County Museum of Art. The NYC Winter Lantern Festival is returning for the 2021 season with three major events that will help illuminate the cold season! Or at least, light up our evenings to make us forget about the too-early sunsets. The days may be getting shorter (ugh), but that just means we have to rely on creative New Yorkers to get lit. |
